The secret to big, red tomatoes you can enjoy all summer long? A homemade fertilizer to add to the stalks or spray on.

What would summer be without a nice salad of juicy, red tomatoes? And when they come straight from the garden, it’s even better. But as we all know, growing tomatoes isn’t always easy, because this fruiting vegetable has very high nutritional requirements. If these are not respected, tomatoes will develop deficiencies, and goodbye to a good harvest. For even more beautiful tomatoes this year, we’ve come up with a gardener’s secret that’s both natural and effective: an easy-to-make homemade fertilizer.

As you can see, tomatoes need regular nourishment to thrive. And rather than using expensive chemical fertilizers, there’s an equally effective solution that you can make yourself. During cultivation, tomatoes will particularly appreciate diluted nettle purin, as it provides nitrogen, which tomatoes particularly need. It also stimulates plant growth by promoting foliage development. It also contains essential trace elements and minerals that boost tomatoes’ resistance to disease and pests. Used regularly, nettle purin improves the overall health of tomato plants, promotes abundant flowering and contributes to the production of higher-quality fruit.

To prepare your homemade nettle purin, simply coarsely chop 500g of fresh nettles or 50g of dried nettles and place them in a basin with 5 liters of water. Leave the mixture to macerate for ten days, stirring occasionally. When the liquid turns dark and gives off a strong odor, your liquid manure is ready. Strain the mixture to remove any residues, and store the liquid in plastic or glass bottles.

To use nettle purin on your tomatoes, it’s essential to dilute it correctly so as not to burn the plants. Dilute one part nettle purin to ten parts water. Apply this diluted solution to the base of your tomato plants every two weeks, especially during the growing season. You can also spray diluted nettle purin on foliage to prevent pest attacks and boost plants’ natural defenses.
