Ornate flower towers make stunning, personalized garden ornaments. Even those who aren’t particularly handy can easily make them.
Clematis and other garden climbers thrive when allowed to reach for the light in flower arrangements. Our ornamental flower towers are made of aluminum wire, which is easy to work with and will not rust. However, it can be difficult to find, so look for strong steel wire of at least 3mm to keep it from becoming too heavy.
Materials Needed
- Aluminum wire, diameter 5 mm, 8 rolls of 2 m. Alternatively, stainless steel wire, fence wire, or bonsai wire, diameter at least 3 mm.
- Aluminum wire, diameter 1.5 mm, 5 rolls of 5 m.
- Flat-nose pliers, possibly round-nose pliers, and heavy-duty wire cutters.
- Prism.
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Roll out and straighten the wires: Roll out the thick aluminum wires and straighten them as best you can.
2. Position the wires in the ground: Stick them 15-20 cm into the ground. It’s easiest to place four in a square and then the remaining four evenly spaced.
3. Bundle the wires: Gather all the strands into a bundle about 30 cm from the top. Wrap a piece of the thinner wire around the bundle a few turns to hold it together.
4. Bend the ends: Bend the ends into twists with the straightener.
5. Wrap the thin wire: Wrap the thin aluminum wire around the thick wires in three places on the rack as shown. Anchor them by wrapping the wire around the upright pegs. You will need one roll for the top piece and two rolls for each of the other two places. The result is almost like a wicker basket.
Additional Tips
- Use leftover wire: You can use the leftover wire to make a simple stick with a twist at the top. Hang it from a prism and it’s ready for the border or pot. For a decorative touch, place a few at different heights in the border or in indoor pots.
- Stainless steel option: If aluminum wire is difficult to find, opt for stainless steel wire or other durable wire types that won’t rust.
