It is commonly believed that cracked watermelons are the sweetest. Sellers often claim this to sell damaged fruit quickly. However, this belief is just a myth, according to nutritionist Victoria Vishnyakova.
The Myth of Sweetness
Vishnyakova explains that watermelons do not crack from excess sugar. Watermelon cracks only from impact, and if it is cracked, germs may have already entered. She advises against buying such fruit.
Safety Concerns
Vishnyakova also urges consumers to avoid buying watermelons from unauthorized sellers and not to purchase pre-sliced watermelons from private vendors. Ready-made halves and quarters should only be bought from stores where they are properly stored and dated.
Proper Handling and Storage
At temperatures above 30°C, food should not be stored without refrigeration for more than an hour. It’s crucial to know the sanitary conditions in which the watermelon was cut. Vishnyakova recommends buying only whole watermelons from reputable sources to ensure safety.
