Spiders aren’t the most loved animals, that’s for sure! They don’t really do any harm, though. In fact, they’re pretty useful for getting rid of those pesky insects. Even so, they’re not always welcome in most homes.
But why do they come into your home? They should have learned by now that they are not welcome among humans.
Here you will find a list of what attracts spiders in your home, so you can pay attention to it in the future, made by the Dutch media RTL.
1. Warmth
As the cold and wet months approach, many animals seek warmth. So do spiders, which look for warm hiding places via cracks or crevices in the wall. If you want to keep spiders out, make sure your doors and windows are well sealed.
2. ‘Delicious’ food
This isn’t about chocolate, cakes or pies. Spiders are attracted to other insects such as mosquitoes, flies, fruit flies and moths. If you’ve opened your windows and bin and see insects flying around, there’s a good chance spiders are getting in too.
Use insect nets on windows and doors or insecticides if you see a lot of insects. It also reduces the chance of spiders appearing in your home.
3. Dark and messy hiding places
Spiders like to find sheltered and dark places to make webs and hide. They love cluttered sheds, garages, crawl spaces, basements, attics and other unused corners. If you have a lot of stuff or cluttered corners in your house, spiders are likely to hide there.
4. Vegetation near the house
Do you have a beautiful climbing plant against the house wall? Or is there a large tree or shrub near a window or door? These overhanging plants are favorite hiding places for arthropods if the plants also attract insects.
If you want fewer spiders in your house, remove these plants from your home and move them further away. Of course, it’s not always easy to do this, but it can be effective if you have a lot of spiders in your home.
5. Items brought into your home
Boxes, bags, boots or umbrellas: spiders like to hide in objects near the front door. It could be that they sneaked in when you brought them in. If something has been outside for a long time, check for spiders before you bring it in.
Myth: Spiders are attracted to light
Many people believe that spiders (and insects) are attracted to light, but this is not the case. Spiders, on the other hand, look for dark places in your home. Some insects, such as moths, are attracted to light, which is why spiders are attracted to places with light.
