Transform Your Garden into a Tick-Free Zone with These 8 Plants

26views

We all love having a beautiful garden, but nobody wants nasty insects in their garden, especially not ticks. We all know how much they can hurt our precious pets and even us humans. But there is good news! You can keep them away by planting the right plants in your garden.

How? Jan Johnsen and Andrew Connolly, two gardening experts quoted on Martha Stewart’s website, explain everything and make some very useful recommendations.

Eight plants that keep ticks out of the garden:

  • Marigold. “They contain pyrethrum, a compound used in many commercial insect repellents.”
  • Rosemary. It has oils that “interfere with the ticks’ sensory mechanisms, preventing them from detecting their hosts”;
  • Chrysanthemum: “Contains pyrethrin, a neurotoxin that kills ticks”;
  • Lemongrass. It has “citronella oil, a well-known insect repellent with a citrus scent”;
  • Lavender. “It repels insects with its strong aromas.”
  • Eucalyptus. Generally, “the strong smell of eucalyptus leaves, which are rich in cineole, is a powerful tick repellent”;
  • Garlic. “It is known for its smell, which is not very appealing to ticks.”
  • Mint. Ticks hate the smell of mint and the plant also helps to create small barriers in the garden.
