Drink This Beverage When You’re Not Very Active: It Helps Counteract the Effects of a Sedentary Lifestyle
Another study has confirmed the amazing benefits of coffee for our bodies! This time, the focus was on how this delicious drink can help those of us who are more sedentary. The results are in, and they’re looking great! However, the researchers themselves are keen to point out that more research is needed. And, of course, coffee is not a substitute for exercise.
The aim of the study was to assess the association between a sedentary lifestyle and coffee consumption and overall and cardiovascular disease mortality in US adults.The results showed that sitting for more than six hours a day and not drinking coffee were strongly associated with an increased risk of death from all causes and cardiovascular disease.

According to a study published in April 2024 in BMC Public Health, those who did not drink coffee and sat for six hours or more per day were 58% more likely to die from all causes than those who drank coffee and sat for less than six hours per day.The study used data from nearly 11,000 people collected between 2007 and 2018 as part of the US National Center for Health Statistics’ National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).
But what if someone sits and drinks a lot of coffee? Huimin Zhou, a researcher at Soochow University in China and lead author of the study, pointed out in an interview with The Washington Post that people who were sedentary and drank coffee had a 24% lower risk of death compared to those who sat for more than six hours and did not drink coffee.

Researchers, mainly from Soochow University in Suzhou, China, reported in their study that sitting for more than eight hours a day can be associated with a 46% risk of death from any cause and a 79% risk of death from cardiovascular disease compared to people who sit for less than four hours a day.
In addition, those who drank the most coffee, more than two cups a day, had a 33% lower risk of dying from any cause and a 54% lower risk of cardiovascular disease compared to those who did not drink coffee.However, the researchers concluded that “because coffee is a complex compound, more research is needed”.
It should be remembered that coffee does not eliminate the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle, and unfortunately there are quite a few.The American Institute for Cancer Research warns of cancers of the colon, breast and oesophagus, among others.It also reminds us that a sedentary lifestyle is associated with an increased risk of diabetes 2.type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
