Everyone has their own fantastic routine when they wake up in the morning! And as we all know, starting the day with this routine is the perfect way to get things off to a great start! Drink a refreshing glass of water, treat yourself to a delicious cup of coffee, go for a quick sports session, and jump straight into the shower… But not all habits are good ones!

Many people are thrilled to get up in the morning and make their bed!

This simple act is often seen as the first accomplishment of the day, a symbol of organisation and discipline. It may seem like a hygienic habit, but in reality, there’s a better way! In fact, it’s even advisable to do the exact opposite. This practice could be far from beneficial for our hygiene – so let’s try something new!

One of the best reasons to wait before making your bed after waking up is to avoid dust mites!

These tiny microscopic creatures are absolutely fascinating! They’re invisible to the naked eye and love living in warm, damp environments, like a bed after a night’s sleep. During the night, we naturally lose sweat and body heat, creating the perfect environment for these mites to thrive! Incredible as it may sound, scientific studies have revealed that a bed can be home to a whopping 1.5 million dust mites! So, if you want to keep your bed free of dust mites, it’s best to avoid making your bed too quickly in the morning. Why? Well, because doing so traps the heat and moisture under the sheets, which makes it easier for mites to thrive.

Mites are not a problem for everyone, but they are known to aggravate allergies and respiratory problems such as asthma. The accumulation of their excrement can lead to symptoms such as sneezing, itching or even more serious respiratory problems.

I’ve got a great routine for you to try out! Here’s a great tip! Instead of making your bed as soon as you get up, simply pull back the sheets and duvet and leave them open to allow air to circulate. Give your bed a chance to air out for at least 30 minutes during the week and a few hours at the weekend!

Opening the windows and letting the room ventilate is even more effective and will improve the air quality in the bedroom – it’s a great way to make your bedroom feel fresh and clean! Then, it’s time for the fun part! Make your bed as usual. The simple act of aerating your bed is a great way to reduce moisture and make it less hospitable to dust mites! Not only that, but it also helps to remove any unpleasant odours that may accumulate during the night. It’s a question of habit, but also of health – and it’s a great one to get into!
