Cleaning your washing machine is one of the best ways to keep it in tip-top shape! It’ll not only help it last longer but also ensure you get the best washing quality. Many people don’t realise how important it is to clean their washing machine regularly, but we’re here to change that! In this article, we’ll be sharing some simple yet effective tips to keep your washing machine in perfect condition.

Baking soda and vinegar as a cleaning agent

You can use a combination of baking soda and vinegar to thoroughly clean your washing machine. Put about 150 g of baking soda in the detergent compartment and 150 ml of vinegar in the fabric softener compartment. Then turn the machine on to the highest temperature and longest washing programme. This will help remove odours, bacteria and limescale that build up in the washing machine.

Cleaning the rubber seal and filter

The rubber gasket and filter are often overlooked parts of a washing machine, but they can greatly affect its performance. After each wash, wipe the gasket with a damp cloth and leave the washing machine door open to allow it to dry. The filter should be cleaned at least twice a year to remove debris and prevent clogging.

Preventing limescale

Limescale is a common problem that can reduce the efficiency of your washing machine. Using water softeners or adding soda to your detergent can help prevent mineral build-up. Alternatively, you can install a magnetic descaler on the washing machine hose to reduce limescale build-up.

Using citric acid

Another natural remedy that can be used to clean your washing machine is citric acid. Pour 250g of citric acid into the washing machine drum and run it on the longest programme at a temperature of at least 60 degrees Celsius. This will remove deposits and disinfect the inside of the washing machine at the same time.

Comprehensive maintenance

Regular maintenance is important for the long-term reliability and efficiency of your washing machine. In addition to cleaning the detergent and fabric softener dispenser, filter, rubber gasket and drum, you should also make sure to regularly defrost and descale your washing machine. It is recommended to clean the washing machine at least once every three months.

Own washing machine maintenance tips

Avoid overloading: never overload the washing machine as this can lead to faster wear and tear and less efficient washing.

Ventilate the washing machine: leave the door open after each wash to ventilate the machine and prevent mould and odours.

Regular maintenance and proper cleaning of the washing machine are key to its long-term functionality and efficiency. Using simple household products such as baking soda, vinegar and citric acid can greatly extend the life of your washing machine and improve the quality of your wash.
