Broken Key in the Lock? Don’t Panic, Solve It This Way!

The key breaking is a real moment of panic. Few people know that it can happen rarely, but it is important to know what you should do in this case. Calling the locksmith and spending time and money is not the best solution. They still have to take time to get to our address and will charge for the work done and for the new lock. So here we reveal some tricks that we can put in place without wasting time and money.

Understanding the Situation and Gathering Tools

The very first thing we need to do is get a good understanding of what happened. We need some tools: a pair of pliers with thin beaks, a metal file, a stiff paper clip, and a flashlight. If you don’t have the latter, a smartphone flash will do.

Using Lubricants and Tools

Does the lock feel stuck? A silicone spray can help us unscrew the lock retainer screws. We can also spray some lubricant and try to pull the key out with pliers or a file. Be careful when applying the spray; it has to act for a few minutes to loosen any obstacles it finds.

To remove the key, use pliers or a file depending on the situation. If the key sticking out is long, use fine-nosed pliers; if it is short, a file is advisable. Gently file from one side until you create a space to insert the paperclip or hook from the outside. Pull gently, and your key will come out of the lock.

Avoiding Common Mistakes

Pay the utmost attention to some mistakes that absolutely must not be made. Never force the lock or disassemble it. This could put you in danger by accidentally injuring yourself or damaging the surroundings. If the lock still has a warranty and we want to fix it, we might risk losing it.

The main thing is to keep calm and think clearly to solve the problem in the best way possible!
