Chrysanthemums are a great example of a colourful symbol that evokes memories and the beauty of autumn. They’re a popular choice for our gardens. However, if we want these plants to keep delighting us for many months to come, it’s important to choose them and care for them correctly. How can we tell if a chrysanthemum seedling is healthy and what can we do to make sure it survives even the toughest weather?

Which chrysanthemums to choose?

When buying chrysanthemums, it’s important to check the condition of the leaves.

  • They should be a dark green and look firm, without any visible spots or changes in colour.
  • A healthy chrysanthemum also keeps its petals.

Potted chrysanthemums need a bit of TLC to keep them in tip-top condition. Make sure you give them the right position, temperature and water them regularly.

  • They do best in a lightly shaded spot, away from direct sunlight.

These plants are happiest in temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius.

Just a heads-up: don’t forget to protect your chrysanthemums from frost by moving them indoors if necessary.

When it comes to watering, it’s all about moderation. The soil should be slightly moist, but too much water can harm the plants.

  • If you keep watering them regularly and use the right fertilisers, the chrysanthemums will be fine and will bloom again next autumn.
