The vast majority of washing machines on the market today come with three detergent compartments. These handy little compartments are usually marked with symbols like II, a flower, and I. To get the absolute best washing results, it’s really important to know which compartment each type of detergent belongs to.
Pre-Wash Compartment (I)
The first compartment, marked with the Roman numeral I, is designated for pre-wash detergent. Pre-washing is necessary when dealing with laundry that is particularly dirty. In such cases, detergent is added to both the pre-wash compartment and the main wash compartment. To use this feature, you must select the pre-wash option on your washing machine before starting the wash cycle. The machine will perform a pre-wash before beginning the main wash programme.
Fabric Softener Compartment (Flower Symbol)
The middle compartment, marked with a symbol resembling a flower, is intended for fabric softener or laundry soap. These products are used to soften and freshen your laundry. However, not all fabrics are suitable for fabric softeners, so it’s important to check the care instructions on your textiles to avoid any mistakes. Additionally, if you use starch, it should be added to this compartment as well.
Main Wash Compartment (II)
The compartment on the left, marked with the Roman numeral II, is for the main detergent used during the wash cycle. This detergent can be in powder or liquid form, depending on the type of laundry you are washing. For white laundry, a detergent containing a bleaching agent is often recommended, while for coloured fabrics, a gentler detergent designed for coloured clothes should be used. For delicate fabrics like silk and wool, a fine detergent is advisable. Typically, powder or concentrated detergents are used without pre-washing. Always refer to the instructions on the detergent packaging for proper dosage.
Direct Detergent Dispensing
While the compartments are the most common way to add detergent, some washing machines allow you to dispense detergent directly into the drum. This method can be convenient for certain types of detergents or specific wash cycles.
By understanding the purpose of each compartment, you can optimize your washing machine’s performance and ensure your laundry is properly cleaned, soft, and fresh every time.
