Unusual Gardening Hack: Place an Old Soup Bowl in Your Garden

We’ve got a great idea for you! If you want to do something good for your garden, you can simply put up an old plate. We’ll show you how this helps the small ecosystem.

There are many ways in which you can make your garden more beautiful. But you should also think about the animals that can feel at home in your little oasis. These include, above all, native birds such as sparrows, blackbirds, starlings and tits.

Many hobby gardeners offer feeding stations with seeds and mealworms, at least in winter, but you can also do something good for your winged friends in the warmer months – all you need is an old soup bowl.

Provide birds with water in summer

Once winter is over, birds can usually find enough food in the wild again. What is then rather scarce is enough water to drink. To do this, simply place a plate that is no longer needed in the garden and fill it with a little water – but out of the reach of cats in a shady spot.

This allows the animals to quench their thirst or simply splash around. The water should not be too deep so that smaller species such as blue tits can stand in the dish without any problems.

However, it is important that you renew the drinking area daily and clean it with a brush to avoid pathogens such as trichomonads or salmonella. These can be dangerous for the animals. They multiply quickly, especially in hot weather.

You will also benefit from this: if the birds drink the water, they will need to consume less liquid through their food – so the peeps will nibble less on your fruit. Cherries, apples, currants and the like will be preserved for you.

If word has spread about your watering hole, you will also be able to observe many beautiful animals.
