Can damage your toilet: Plumbers warn against cleaning products

When you clean at home, you want to believe that the products you use are safe and effective. But a group of plumbers have shared a cleaning product they would never use in the toilet.

Mr Rooter Plumbing Company has revealed something they never do when cleaning bathrooms. They’ve shared products and methods they avoid at all costs to prevent costly mistakes.

They specifically warn against a cleaning product that can “ruin” your toilet. They recommend using a toilet brush and a spray cleaner rather than putting a bleach tablet in the toilet.

Although it requires more work, they emphasise that “the longer the tablet sits, the longer its chemicals will break down the toilet’s materials. The toilet pipes will eventually start leaking frequently and the toilet will not flush properly.”

Experts also warn homeowners that not everything can be flushed, even if the packaging says so: “When it says flushable, it just means it will go through the toilet. But what that does to the plumbing system, especially if you have older pipes, is worrying. For example, rags don’t dissolve in cast iron pipes,” plumber Kelly.

Kelly suggests that if you use flush rags, throw them in the trash instead of flushing them out. Plumbers also recommend avoiding the use of harsh chemicals to unclog drains.

They warn that it can do “more harm than good” when trying to deal with blockages caused by hair. Kelly explained how these strong chemicals can “eat through old pipes”.

Another popular tip is to use baking soda in drains to loosen clogs.

However, AJ Jenkins, a plumber, points out that using baking soda mixed with vinegar “can eat into the rubber gasket that holds the sink together.”
