It’s totally normal to see some cockroaches in your kitchen from time to time. But why do you find them there?
What’s even more surprising is that even if you clean thoroughly you may still find them in certain places.
Cockroaches are hardy insects that can survive in a variety of environments and are attracted to food and moisture.
Here are some possible reasons why you may have found a cockroach in your kitchen:
Food outside the cabinets: Cockroaches feed on everything. If there are easily accessible food sources in your kitchen, such as food you haven’t covered, crumbs or splatters from cooking, then it’s not unlikely that you’ll have visitors.
Poor hygiene: Cockroaches thrive in unclean environments. If your kitchen is not cleaned and maintained regularly, it provides favourable conditions for them to breed and survive in.
Moisture: Cockroaches need water to survive. Dripping pipes and faucets or excessive moisture in your kitchen usually attract them. Also possible reasons they appear are your pet’s water bowl or a dripping refrigerator.
Cracks and holes: Cockroaches can enter your home through small cracks and holes or breaks. They have the ability to squeeze into tiny openings, so it’s important to seal any gaps in walls, floors or windows to prevent their entry.
Your neighbours may be responsible: If your neighbors or nearby buildings have cockroach problems, then they are very likely to migrate into your home in search of food and shelter.
Waste management: improper waste management, such as leaving bins uncovered or not disposing of rubbish regularly, can attract cockroaches.
In addition, cockroaches may attract roaches, which can cause the household to attract roaches:
Clean the kitchen daily: Maintain the hygiene of your kitchen by cleaning it daily. Wipe the counter and floor thoroughly if they get dirty, and wipe the surfaces with a wet cloth as well to make sure there are no splatter stains.
Seal your food: Store food in airtight containers, clean up food scraps and avoid leaving your pet’s food out overnight.
Check the humidity: fix any leaks or sources of excess moisture in your kitchen. Keep sinks and counters dry and clean your pet’s water bowl for the night.
Seal gaps and cracks in the walls: Seal cracks and crevices around doors, windows and pipes to prevent cockroaches from entering your home.
