Are you interested in fertilising your flowers or plants in your garden in a natural way? Then we have good news for you – you can make do with what you find in your fridge at home. Maybe a couple of glasses of fresh milk. Let’s see how to make your own homemade fertiliser. It’s really easy!

Milk as a home gardening wonder

Milk contains a number of substances that are important for healthy plant development. Calcium, vitamin B or potassium – your plants will appreciate it.

Simply mix a homemade fertiliser with water and milk and watch your plants thrive. Not only will the milk nourish their root systems, making them stronger, hardier and more vigorous, but it can also protect them from certain pests.

How to make homemade milk feed

Ideally, choose fresh, unpasteurised milk. Dilute it with water at a ratio of about ten parts water to one part milk, for example 100ml milk to one litre of water. Apply the fertiliser to the roots of the plants once or twice a week. The plants will produce more flowers and be stronger overall, and the nutrients from the roots will reach and benefit the whole plant.

This spray is also good for aphids – if your plants are infested with this parasite, spray the milk solution on the leaves as well. This is ideal for roses, for example, which often suffer from aphids.

Pest control

Milk will also protect your crops from pests. It is a great spray for tomatoes or cucumbers. Mix one litre of fresh milk with ten litres of water and add a few drops of iodine for a better effect. Use this to water your vegetables before they start to bloom and fruit. It doesn’t matter whether they’re in a bed or a greenhouse. You’ll be protecting them and giving them the nutrients they need to thrive and produce more.
