Constipation can be uncomfortable and interfere with daily activities. While common remedies include high-fiber foods, exercise and prune juice, tea can also help with bowel movements.

Tea, the second most consumed beverage globally, offers antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and hydrating properties, which aids digestion. Hot tea can stimulate the digestive system and caffeinated varieties can increase colon contractions.

Regular bowel movements are vital for health, eliminating waste and preventing digestive problems. A normal range is three or more bowel movements a week.

For relief from constipation, senna tea is particularly effective due to its sennosides, which stimulate colon contractions and soften stools, usually working within 6 to 12 hours.

“Senna has a well-established laxative effect,” explains Whitney Stuart, a registered dietitian. Senna has been used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat constipation and promote gut health, she added.

However, excessive use can lead to addiction and other health problems, so it is best used with caution and under the guidance of a professional.

Other teas beneficial for those suffering from mild constipation:

  • Peppermint tea: Relaxes digestive muscles.
  • Ginger tea: Stimulates digestion and has a mild laxative effect.
  • Dandelion tea: Acts as a diuretic and mild laxative.

These teas support digestive health and relieve constipation, but it is advisable to consult a health professional before starting any new remedy.
