8 things in the house that need regular replacement

There are eight things in the house that need to be replaced regularly. Some household items, like cleaning products, seem to last forever, but they actually need to be replaced regularly because over time, they just don’t work as well.

8 things in the house that need regular replacement

Washing powder and bleach

Unless you do laundry a few times a week, you probably don’t need to buy laundry detergent in bulk.

It doesn’t spoil on its own, but it does lose its cleaning ability over time – so it’s worth checking the date of manufacture and recommended conditions of use.

Powder detergents work well for a long time as long as they are not exposed to moisture. Bleach also begins to break down after about a year, losing its disinfecting and sanitizing power.

Surface cleaners

As with detergents, the chemicals in household chemicals break down over time, making them less effective at keeping your home clean and sanitary.
If you frequently perform thorough cleaning, then the product is used up rather quickly.
However, if you find hidden bottles that haven’t been touched soon, check them: anything that thickens, changes color, smells, or doesn’t foam is most likely expired.

Brushes and sponges

Although these cleaners don’t have an expiration date, it’s not uncommon to use them for much longer than recommended.
For example, a toilet brush is recommended to be discarded and replaced every few months – otherwise bacteria can build up on the bristles and handle.
It is recommended that kitchen sponges are changed about once a month or an alternative that can be disinfected, such as a silicone scraper, is used.

Sunscreen

Over time, this tool, which is mainly used in summer, loses its effectiveness. It is therefore recommended to check the shelf life of old bottles before the season starts – just as you would when buying.

Cosmetics and medicines

Storing these products past their expiry date can also reduce their effectiveness or increase the risk of the product spoiling or being affected by bacteria and fungi.
Although cosmetic products appear to be safer than expired medicines, most have a recommended expiry date on the label. In particular, mascara is recommended to be replaced every few months.

Toothbrushes

According to the American Dental Association, a toothbrush or electric toothbrush head should be replaced every three months, slightly more often if the brush is used by a child or in the case of illness.
An old toothbrush will not clean as thoroughly, leaving plaque and allowing germs to multiply around the teeth.

Filters

Every home has nearly a dozen appliances – dryer, HVAC system, range hood, etc. – that contain filters, all of which require regular replacement.
Ultimately, filters ensure the cleanliness of the air, water and clothes in the room. Depending on the type, filters should be changed every 1-6 months.

Smoke detectors and fire extinguishers

Fire safety should be taken as seriously as possible. Smoke and gas detectors should be checked every few months and replaced at the recommended time from the date of manufacture.
Disposable fire extinguishers also have a shelf life of 10 to 12 years, but each year the appliance should be checked for defects and damage.
