Mould in the bathroom or other parts of our homes is a problem. As well as being very unsightly and often causing a foul smell, mould is also a potential risk to our health. How to get rid of it as quickly and cheaply as possible?

Prevention and possible quick action

In the event of mould in the home, prevention is essential. If you have a windowless bathroom or live in a house prone to high humidity, it is important to prevent mould. Install a fan in your bathroom, or at least ventilate it frequently with an open door. Paint the walls of the rooms with anti-mould paint, ventilate frequently and, if possible, put a bowl of salt in the corners to partially absorb the moisture.

Once mould has started to appear, it is important not to wait for anything and to take action immediately. The mould will soon spread at an uncontrollable rate.

Use commonly available remedies

You can also get rid of incipient mould with cheap, commercially available remedies. Just keep baking soda, vinegar and white toothpaste at home. Add the paste and baking soda to the vinegar to make a well-mixed mixture.

Then apply this on paper napkins, for example, which you stick to the areas with mould and leave on. This should take around an hour. Especially if you had to use a lot of ingredients, don’t stay in the bathroom too long during that time, so you don’t get too much vinegar fumes.

Finish

After allowing the mixture to work, remove the cloths from the walls and clean the areas with mould. A toothbrush will come in handy, especially in joints or corners, but it’s a good idea to use it in all areas – the bristles will get into invisible joints and depressions. Afterwards, clean the areas with warm water and a cleanser or spring cleaner. If you don’t mind using household chemicals, spray the affected areas with an anti-mould product.

After this cleaning operation, be sure to air out the room really thoroughly.
