How to Use Salt on a Sponge Before Washing Dishes: A Helpful Tip

22views

A simple and easy way that you may not have thought of until now to revitalise them is salt.

This product that you use in cooking can also clean sponges by eliminating bacteria and dirt, thus extending their usefulness.

Salt in sponges

Soaking sponges in a seawater solution is an effective option for disinfecting and deodorizing sponges without harsh chemicals. This method extends sponge life and reduces waste, making it a cost-effective and chemical-free option for maintaining a clean kitchen.

Read how you can use salt to extend the usefulness of household sponges:

Salt water for disinfecting sponges

Just dissolve a quarter cup of salt (table, sea or kosher) in warm water. Make sure the salt is fully dissolved to avoid damaging the sponge fibers with abrasive particles. Then, let the sponge soak in the solution for several hours, or even overnight if you can. The salt will sterilize the sponge and break down any trapped particles or grease. Just rinse the sponge thoroughly with clean water to remove any salt residue.

How to keep sponges clean

By establishing a regular cleaning routine, you can keep sponges in excellent condition. After each use, rinse the sponge thoroughly and wring it out to get the water off. Ideally, place it in a ventilated area to prevent the growth of mould and moisture.
Otherwise, place the sponge in an upright position and away from surfaces that may have bacteria.
Be careful not to forget to replace sponges at regular intervals as they have an expiry date. The visible signs of wear and tear are frayed edges, reduced cleaning performance, fading, and the appearance of a dull surface.
