The slugs are coming: How to fight them while you’re on vacation

Fortunately, there is good advice if you want to win the war against slugs.

  1. Animals can do the work for you

The nature guide’s best advice is simply other animals that can help you eradicate the dark brown menace.

– Then there’s someone else to look after the garden while we’re working or on vacation, says Karin Winther.

Animals like hedgehogs, frogs and birds. So what you can do yourself is create a good environment for the other animals by building bird boxes, for example.

Both vine snails and leopard snails can also help you. They eat the slug’s eggs and according to Karin Winther, unlike the slug, they are a good friend of the garden.

If you want to get a few of the above pets, they can be found where there is calcareous soil.

  1. Cut them in half

However, if you want to get involved in the fight yourself, you’ll need to be armed with scissors.

Because the snails need to be cut.

It may sound macabre, but it’s actually the gentlest way if you’re going to kill them. There are also people who use salt to dry them out or water or beer to drown them, but that’s a pain in the ass, according to the nature guide.

– “Slug poison is also a bad idea because hedgehogs eat the poisonous snails,” says Karin Winther.

  1. Wool on

If you want to protect your plants without killing the killer snail, it’s time to put on your winter clothes.

Well, not yourself. But you can wrap the soil around your plants in wool to keep the slugs away.
