It doesn’t matter how often you clean your toilet—with toilet cleaner, anti-limescale products, or whatever else you like to use—over time, a brown layer will appear in most toilet bowls. This is called urine scale. It’s a stubborn layer that makes your toilet look grimy and that you can’t just brush away.

How urinary stone forms in the toilet
But before we explain how you can remove urine stone, it’s useful to know exactly what urine stone is and how it is formed. In fact, urine stone is similar to limescale, which also leaves a visible deposit, but white instead of brown. The difference is mainly in its composition. Whereas lime is one mineral, urinary stone contains several mineral salts. These mineral salts are naturally found in the human body and are disposed of as urine. Your urine includes the waste products phosphorus, calcium, potassium, sodium and magnesium. And those waste products can cause the inside of your snow-white toilet bowl to turn yellow or brown over time.
3 ways to remove urinary stone
1. Remove urine stone with cola
It may sound strange, but cola turns out to be a perfect cleaning agent for certain purposes. Earlier we listed what you can clean using cola, including removing limescale. But it can also be used to dissolve urine scale, simply by pouring it into the toilet bowl and letting it soak in for a while before scrubbing. Note, however, if you suffer from extremely heavy urinary stone in the toilet bowl, the methods below may be a better solution.
2. Removing urine stone with cleaning vinegar
An even cheaper and more effective alternative is cleaning vinegar. But you need to have a lot of patience. It has to soak in for quite a long time before the scale dissolves or comes off. Tip: Before you go to bed, pour a lot of cleaning vinegar into the toilet bowl, let it soak overnight and the next morning scrub it clean with a toilet brush or a scouring pad. Did it help considerably, but is not all gone? Then repeat the step again.
